A BERMUDA SHORT STOP

So, here we are in Bermuda again. This time the weather is actually beautiful, finally. We arrived on the 26th of May, to the day a year ago when we left. It seems as though we missed an entire year of sailing, but we did have a lot of fun doing other things, so all in all we’re happy with that. Anyway, the sail over from Beaufort was pretty uneventful: When we left the dock we sailed out to Cape Lookout to wait for a weather window and enjoy the solitude at anchor for several days. It was a great spot to get away from everything and settle into boat living again. The water was a bit brisk for swimming, but a quick dip was refreshing. The place is also full of four types of turtles, especially giant Loggerheads!

We left the cape and sailed on a fine starboard reach almost the entire way here. Though the wind never got above 8 knots for more than a few hours, we ended up motor sailing quite a bit. But the seas were calm and the moon was full and we made the 660 miles in 96 hrs. When the wind dropped completely we even went for a swim in water that is 13,000 feet deep! Nothing but crystal clarity below your toes.

So we’ve been anchored in St. George’s since Sunday enjoying the scenery. The other day we took the ferry around to the Naval Dockyard to see the old buildings. It is now the berth for cruise ships, ugh! Two giant ships come in every Tuesday and stay until Friday afternoon. So both ends of the islands get swarmed by tourists. But, Friday and Saturday the place is empty and easy to relax. We rode the bus from the dockyard to Hamilton, which is like any other medium sized city only more so. The buildings all look like they just got a fresh coat of paint and the streets are clean and people say hello and cars stop when you cross the street. It is a strangely metropolitan city compared to the other island capitols we’ve been to. Very purposeful and bustling (of course, Bermuda is the most expensive place in the world to live). After picking up a new VHF antenna and enjoying the city, we jumped back on the bus, which is first-rate, for St. Georges. We shared a drink with some local friends and some fellow sailors, then back to the boat.

Today, Saturday, it is blowing like stink and we’re finishing up the laundry, making a Portuguese flag for our next destination, The Azores, and generally getting ready for an 1800 mile passage tomorrow. Nancy, the weather goddess, tells me it is time to go, so we’ll weigh anchor and head out soon. I’ll try to post something enroute now that we have this fancy Starlink thingy, so stay tuned, keep in touch and tell a friend about us. There are exciting new entries in the Book Nook as well.

Spread the word. Share this post!
